Hypnosis for Anxiety Issues

Anxiety isn't just "worrying too much."

Anxiety is more of a subconscious alarm system that's stuck in the “on” position — racing thoughts, a body that won't relax, and a mind that keeps rehearsing problems that haven't happened yet. Having someone tell you to “just calm down” or trying to talk through it intellectually only goes so far when the reaction itself is happening below the level of conscious (eg: logical mind) thought.

Anxiety happens when your mind won't stop running the worst-case scenario.

Rather than only addressing anxious thoughts on the surface, or trying to “logic them into behaving," Hypnotherapy works directly with the subconscious stress response that’s running away with your mind and body.

Our master hypnotists at Columbus Ohio Hypnosis specialize in all types of stress and anxiety to help you feel better fast.

Common Types of Anxiety We Can Help With

  • Generalized anxiety — persistent worry, racing thoughts, and a mind that won't switch off, even when nothing specific is wrong

  • Social anxiety — fear of judgment, embarrassment, or being watched in social or professional settings

  • Health anxiety — persistent worry about symptoms, illness, or medical situations

  • Panic attacks — sudden, intense physical anxiety symptoms (racing heart, shortness of breath, dizziness)

  • Test Anxiety — pre-test anxiety, anxiety during test-taking, and “blanking out/recall” anxiety.

  • Anticipatory anxiety — dread building up before an event, appointment, or situation, sometimes worse than the event itself

  • Sleep-disrupting anxiety — a mind that won't quiet down at bedtime or during the night

  • Anxiety around medical or dental procedures — needles, scans, surgery, or dental work

  • Everyday stress and overwhelm — anxiety tied to work, relationships, or major life transitions, even without a formal diagnosis

If you're looking for a specific fear or phobia that isn’t listed above, or a teen or child-specific concern, feel free to reach out to us to discuss at 614-594-9766. (text or call)

How Hypnotherapy Works for Anxiety Issues

  • Deep relaxation training — since a relaxed nervous system and an anxious one can't fully coexist at the same time, hypnotherapy builds your physical skill of genuinely calming the body, rather than just "thinking calm thoughts."

  • Identifying and reframing the underlying trigger — anxiety often has a specific root, even when it feels like general background noise. In hypnotherapy we can neutralize the underlying trigger so it no longer triggers your subconscious mind into the cycles of overreaction.

  • Interrupting the anticipatory spiral — working with the subconscious pattern that jumps straight to worst-case thinking, so there's a genuine pause before the spiral starts.

  • Building a felt sense of real safety and control — rather than just suppressing the anxious thought, sessions work toward a subconscious sense that you can actually handle what's ahead next in a calmer, clearer, more confident way.

  • Practical self-hypnosis tools — Our master hypnotists will also often teach you techniques you can use independently, in the moment, when anxiety starts to build.

What the Research Says

Hypnotherapy for anxiety has a substantial and internationally diverse base of evidence, including a dedicated meta-analysis and multiple randomized controlled trials across different countries and anxiety issues:

  1. A dedicated meta-analysis found hypnosis meaningfully outperforms control conditions for anxiety. Analyzing 17 trials across generalized, performance-related, and medical/procedural anxiety, researchers found that the average participant receiving hypnosis had greater anxiety reduction than about 79% of control participants at the end of treatment — and that advantage grew to 84% at the longest follow-up point measured. The same analysis found hypnosis was more effective when combined with other psychological interventions than when used alone (Valentine, Milling, Clark & Moriarty, International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, 2019).

  2. A controlled trial in Germany found hypnosis produced anxiety reduction in the vast majority of participants facing a real medical stressor. In a study of 102 patients undergoing tooth removal, only 9 failed to report reduced anxiety after a hypnosis session — a strong real-world result for a single-session intervention (Glaesmer, Geupel & Haak, Patient Education and Counseling, 2015).

  3. A U.S. randomized controlled trial found hypnosis produced sustained anxiety reduction that held up at follow-up, not just immediately after treatment. Studying anxiety in postmenopausal women, researchers found significant anxiety reductions from baseline through the follow-up period, with hypnosis outperforming the control condition throughout (Roberts, Rhodes & Elkins, Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings, 2021).

  4. A randomized controlled trial found that hypnosis reduced both anxiety and pain during rigid cystoscopy, an invasive procedure used to examine the bladder. The study included 90 men undergoing the procedure for the first time and found that hypnotic communication, used alongside standard local anesthesia, also helped shorten procedure time (Tezcan, Ademoğlu, Can et al., Journal of Endourology, 2021).

  5. A randomized controlled trial found a short structured hypnosis program significantly reduced psychological distress in university students, using a validated distress measure administered both immediately and months after the intervention — suggesting benefits that hold up over time, not just in the moment (Heydarpour, Heydarpour & Torabi, Discover Mental Health, 2026).

The takeaway: anxiety is one of the better-researched applications of hypnosis internationally, with converging evidence across both everyday anxiety and anxiety tied to specific medical stressors. As with any approach, individual results vary, and hypnotherapy tends to work best as one part of a broader plan rather than a stand-alone fix for severe or clinically diagnosed anxiety disorders.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hypnotherapy a replacement for therapy or medication? Not necessarily — for many people, hypnotherapy works well alongside therapy or medical treatment rather than instead of it. If you have a diagnosed anxiety disorder, it's worth discussing hypnotherapy with your prescribing doctor or therapist as a complementary approach rather than a substitute.

Will I lose control during a session? No. Hypnosis is a focused, relaxed state of attention. You remain aware throughout, and a hypnotherapist cannot make you do anything against your will.

How many sessions does this typically take? It varies by the person and the type of anxiety. Some people notice a shift after just one or two sessions, especially for situational anxiety tied to a specific event; more persistent or generalized anxiety often benefits from an ongoing series of sessions.

Can hypnotherapy help with panic attacks specifically? Our master hypnotists work with panic symptoms directly, both by reducing the overall anxiety baseline and by teaching in-the-moment self-hypnosis techniques to use when a panic response starts to build.

Is hypnotherapy safe for anxiety related to a medical condition? Hypnotherapy is generally considered safe and non-invasive. If your anxiety is connected to a diagnosed medical or psychiatric condition, loop in your physician or psychiatrist so your care is coordinated.

I met with my hypnotist, at Columbus Ohio Hypnosis, twice and will be forever grateful. They made my anxiety, fear, and claustrophobia disappear in ONE session — I used to freak out in an MRI, a car wash, even riding with my husband of 20 years."
